Under-19 Asia Cup: Sehwag and Dravid's sons included in India squad, Raichandani named captain
India has announced a 15-member squad for the Under-19 Asia Cup. The team includes Aryaveer Sehwag, son of former opener Virender Sehwag, and Anvay Dravid, son of former captain Rahul Dravid. Lakshya Raichandani will captain the side, with Yashvardhan Chouhan as vice-captain. The tournament will be played in Muscat, Oman, from November 4 to 14. India are in Group A with Nepal, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group will reach the semi-finals.
India have picked two wicketkeepers in the squad. Apart from Anvay Dravid, Rajat Baghel has also been selected for wicketkeeping duties. The batting options include Aryaveer Sehwag, VK Vineet, Kushagra Ojha, Arjun Rajput and Manal Chauhan. V. Yashveer, Aryan Savsani, Mohit Ulva, Kavya Patel, Shavin Vinod and Ishan Sud have also been given opportunities. The selectors have tried to build a balanced team based on recent form and requirements.
The biggest talking points in the squad are Aryaveer and Anvay. Both come from cricketing families, and their fathers are big names in Indian cricket. However, both have been picked not merely because of their names but on the basis of their performances in domestic youth cricket. Aryaveer recently scored 28, 47 and 34 in the Under-19 ODI series against Australia. Anvay made 38 and 9 in the same series, while he had earlier played an innings of 87 off 67 balls in the last ODI against Sri Lanka.
Under Raichandani, the Indian youth team have been in strong form in recent months. In September-October, India swept Australia 2-0 in the four-day series. They then won the ODI series 3-0 as well. Beating Australia in both formats is important for the team's confidence.
Before that, India's performance against Sri Lanka was mixed. India won the two-match four-day series 1-0 but lost the ODI series 2-1. This means the team has talent, but the challenge of performing consistently and staying calm under pressure remains. The knockout pressure in the Asia Cup will be different, especially against strong teams such as Pakistan and Bangladesh.
In the four-day series against Australia, captain Lakshya Raichandani played an important role with the bat. He scored 250 runs in three innings. His 240-run knock in the first match proved crucial for the team. His form as captain is a relief for India. If he maintains that rhythm in the Asia Cup, India's batting will have a strong foundation.
Vice-captain Yashvardhan Chouhan was India's most successful batter in the ODI series. He scored 176 runs in two innings against Australia. He hit a century in the second match. This shows that Raichandani and Chouhan can form the backbone of India's youth batting. Their roles will not be limited to scoring runs; they will also have to guide the team and handle the younger players.
Wicketkeeper Anvay Dravid is seen as the first-choice keeper. He has experience in both batting and wicketkeeping. His 87 off 67 balls against Sri Lanka shows his ability. His performance against Australia was not as big, but the team management will treat him as part of the longer plan. Rajat Baghel gives the team a second wicketkeeping option.
India's selection looks balanced. The top order has options such as Aryaveer, Vineet and Kushagra, while captain Raichandani and vice-captain Chouhan can take responsibility in the middle order. Manal Chauhan, Arjun Rajput and others give the team depth. The bowling group includes names such as Aryan Savsani, Mohit Ulva, Kavya Patel, Shavin Vinod and Ishan Sud, offering variety. However, roles change quickly at youth level, and players have to prove themselves in different conditions.
For Aryaveer Sehwag, this tournament is a big chance to prove himself. He scored 28, 47 and 34 in three innings against Australia. He has the ability to play strokes, and if he turns starts into big scores, India will benefit. Consistency is the biggest challenge at youth level. A good start in a tournament like the Asia Cup can make the team stronger in the race for the semi-finals.
India's Group A includes Nepal, Pakistan and the UAE. Matches against Pakistan always bring extra pressure. Nepal have improved in youth cricket in recent years and cannot be taken lightly. The UAE may also be familiar with conditions in Muscat. India will need to keep their plans clear in every match.
Group B includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh and Afghanistan have strong youth teams, while Sri Lanka also have good experience. Malaysia cannot be considered weak. Since two teams from each group will reach the semi-finals, even one defeat in the group stage could make things difficult for India.
The team's biggest strength is its recent form. Beating Australia in both formats is not easy, and it has boosted the confidence of the Indian players. But the pressure in the Asia Cup will be different. In knockout cricket, one bad day can end the entire tournament. India will therefore need to find rhythm from the early matches and show patience in big moments.
India's 15-member squad is: Lakshya Raichandani (captain), Aryaveer Sehwag, VK Vineet, Yashvardhan Chouhan (vice-captain), Kushagra Ojha, Arjun Rajput, Manal Chauhan, Anvay Dravid (wicketkeeper), Rajat Baghel (wicketkeeper), V. Yashveer, Aryan Savsani, Mohit Ulva, Kavya Patel, Shavin Vinod and Ishan Sud.
The selected team shows a mix of experience and youthful energy. Some players have experience of four-day matches, while others performed well in the ODI series. Conditions in Muscat may help both pace and spin. The team will have to decide its strategy according to the conditions. Having two wicketkeepers gives the team management the option of choosing different combinations.
Weather and pitch conditions in Oman could pose a new challenge for India. The Indian players have recently played in home conditions, while the behaviour of the wind, humidity and pitch in Muscat may be different. The team will need to understand the conditions from the first match and build rhythm accordingly.
Tournaments like this are important for the development of players in youth cricket. A good performance in the Asia Cup can open doors in domestic cricket and make the road ahead easier. Aryaveer and Anvay will face extra scrutiny because their fathers are big names in Indian cricket. But the important thing for the team management will be to give all players a similar environment and let them focus on their game.
Overall, India will enter the Asia Cup as a strong contender. Recent wins, the form of the captain and vice-captain and a balanced selection are in the team's favour. But in a youth tournament, consistency and decisions under pressure will decide the difference. In the tournament starting November 4, India will aim for a good start and then move towards the semi-finals and the title.
